    Hard surface reducer question

Luan and new flooring are on the same subfloor? If so, luan + linoleum = 5/16" height? New flooring 3/4" height? So isn't the difference 3/4" - 5/16" = 7/16"? While we're at it do you have the tools e.g. table saw and router to do some cutting to make your own transition piece?

    Hard surface reducer question

What is the height difference between the new oak flooring and linoleum? Do the new oak flooring boards run parallel or perpendicular to the linoleum?

Reducing squeaks from above before carpeting

Never used them....seems they'd work better on carpeted floors....not sure what type of hold there would be on hardwood if the head was snapped off. Use flat head screws. You can use trim head screws, SPAX, or GRK screws which will cut their own countersink for the head. No specific...

Reducing squeaks from above before carpeting

Hard to believe that the entire subfloor is shot...bathroom area may have gotten some water damage. I would start by adding screws in the areas where the squeaks are. This would be the easiest and least expensive way to start. Get some self tapping screws to eliminate having to predrill. If...

    Hardwood Steps.

Old nose has the wrap over? New nose doesn't have a wrap over? If this is what you are saying then how about a piece of scotia molding under the new nosing to cover the gap. Quicker and easier than installing a taller riser or making a thicker nosing.

    Handguns

Can anyone recommend a good locking case for storing handguns in the house and transporting to the shooting range? Not too large....just needs to hold 2 or 3 guns. It will be a gift so nothing cheap.

    Stair Runner Installation

I live in Massachusetts where the code for tread depth is 9" vs the national minimum of 10". Unless my wife wants stair rods we will go without them. A lot of the older houses in this area have really steep steps that I assume are grandfathered in.

Do the customers have you add the stair rods? I asked my wife if she wanted them but she decided no. I think they look nice and add some pizzazz.

Played it safe and went with the scotia.

Thank You. She said to leave the 'oriental' for now and hopefully she can get used to it....stroke issues can take up to 18 months to resolve, if they ever do resolve. Personally, I liked the bare hardwood treads (I spent a lot of time finishing and installing them) but she gets to play the...

Also have to match the repeating Oriental pattern. I've started milling the scotia molding and will see how it looks. If it looks good and my wife approves I'll install it and quit while I'm ahead. If not, please submit your quotes to cut and fit the riser piece. While you're at it submit...

    Stair Runner Installation

I'm really hesitant to cut what's already installed. Can't take a chance on goofing. I may just install a piece of scotia molding under the landing tread nosing to cover the carpet edge......my wife is onboard with that idea.

Yes, the edges are serged. How do you suggest that I fix/replace the riser piece?

    Stair Runner Installation

I have to cut it to length i.e. the height of the riser. The runner is one piece approximately 20 feet long. I was going to cut the damaged riser piece off at the corner where it meets the tread. The oriental runner has a repeating pattern so I was going to lay the damaged riser piece on top...

Should I cut out the bad riser piece at the corner where the riser and tread meet?

    Stair Runner Installation

I stapled the runner under the top landing nosing and tried to cut it off by running a carpet cutter along the underside of the nosing. I butchered it. What is the best way to fix it? I have a couple of feet of extra runner.....just need to match the oriental pattern.

    Stair Runner Installation

Found them. Another question. I have access to a HF pneumatic stapler which takes staples that have a 1/4" crown. I'm assuming that a 1/16" difference in crown width (3/16" vs 1/4") shouldn't be an issue? I did find some Hitachi 1/4" crown staples which are referred to as finish staples...

Maybe in the carpet section? I looked in the aisle that has all the nails, construction screws, etc.

Where do you buy this size staple? I didn't see that size in HD.
