    Stair treads again

Do I have this right? 6'3" = highup. I often wonder how people come up with their user name. For a while I was thinking that you were from a mountainous part of the country then when you mentioned your height the light came on and I had an AHA moment....or am I totally wrong?

    Stair treads again

Yes they do....for the executives. Sounds like you have a very nice career and are the exception to the rule and perception of contractors in general. Could sure use a guy like you around here. Your work ethic and attention to detail are a rare commodity these days.

    Stair treads again

Sounds like a guy that has been doing home repair work for the homeowners in the development where I live. He's been working here continually for years. Homeowners feed him, invite him to parties, pick him up and drive him home when necessary. I mentioned this to him and he told me that he...

    Stair treads again

Good is an understatement.....the food looks great....not many places give you a grilled hamburger bun these days. OK, time to level with us....are you the homeowner?

    Stair treads again

I can't afford a $500 saw either. You'll get a good workout hauling it around and work up your appetite. I don't need to work up my appetite because somebody left the camera at the job site and didn't save a burger for me.

    Stair treads again

If you need some help I'll be glad to work for BBQ. Business must be good if you can afford a $500 chop saw....I got my first one last century and it's held together with rubber tie downs and still works great. I couldn't bear the thought of retiring it so I just got the Sears Slider when it...

    Stair treads again

Some miter saws let you easily override the detente...so you could do a cut that is not a perfect 90 degrees. Some of my overrides were so slight that the saw kept slipping back into the detente so I just put a narrow wedge between the board and saw fence to tilt the board to the angle that I...

    Stair treads again

I was going to ask if that was 1823 or 1923 but when I saw sheetrock I figured 1923....but then again wasn't it horse hair plaster then too? Would the car painter be cutting the grass or hand trimming the rose bushes? I can picture your painter feathering out the poly for a perfect glass-like...

Looks like you've got it all under control. Will you post some pics when you're done?

    Stair treads again

When you say that all stringers were cut correctly...is this based on your measurements of all of them? If the stringer cutter used any of the 3/8" variance you may have to tweak a tread or riser width. How far back on the riser does the 1/8" gap run? You mention that the treads aren't 100%...

    Stair treads again

Yes, that is what staves are. Depending on how they mill them one face may look better than the other but you would want both surfaces as flat as possible. 100 grit should be enough before applying the poly. 2 nails or screws per stringer. From what you have said the house is being lived in...

    Stair treads again

Although I prefinished all treads and risers before installing, I was concerned about the oil poly smell when I put a dab of poly over the nail holes filler....the small amount of poly dried fairly quickly and I really didn't smell it. Can you experiment with a few drops of poly and see if your...

    Stair treads again

I just did a set of Red Oak Stair treads. I used 3/4" as the subtreads (had carpet on them before) were 3/4" ply. I bought them un-finished and prefinished before installing. Just did a light sanding by hand to clean them with 150/180. I used Last N Last oil based semi gloss poly...3...

    disabled senior needs help.

I just got through cutting and pulling up a house full of wall to wall carpeting and I'm not sure I could have done it without getting down on my hands and knees. Where do you live? Could you contact elder services or local churches, Boy Scouts, etc. to see if they could provide a volunteer...

    Hardwood install questions

Red Oak is the most common hardwood installed and considered the baseline for other species and it should be acclimated. Hard Maple is less dimensionally stable than Red Oak so obviously that should be acclimated too. Some manufacturers provide detailed instructions for their product and some...

The HF multi tool blades are pretty bad but Bosch blades are really good and fit the HF tool attachment stake pattern.
