Good grief Floorist. I think I make that much off my carpet guy without doing any of the kicking. You should move out here to jersey. Ill give you a ton of carpet work that is if you don't mind doing box store work, lol.

You guys are joking, right? Am I living in a magical part of the country where I'm actually turning work away because I can't get to it in a timely manner?

If I charged $3.50 and did a house a day I'd be rollin in $
I don't have a clue as to how to 'punch out' work.............. it's not done till the work is as good as it can be done. I'm a nit picker and this trade is based on production/volume.
I should have become a longshoreman when I had a chance back in the 70's.

I should have stayed as an auto mechanic. I was a certified Toyota mechanic in 1971-72.
I don't want to do much work and here $4 is all you can get anymore. Too many young hacks.

That's insane. You guys are craftsmen and should be compensated as such.

I get compensated "as such" every time I repair seams and restretch carpet, but I never get the original installs. Stores like paying me after the fact. Most of my store work is doing that. So far, about $1500 this year on seam repairs and restretching. Like I said, they want production volume to compete with other stores doing the same thing.

I did a lot of that for years. I could make $100 an hour. Just not enough hours. Just like when I was doing apts. I could do a 40 yds, apt in 1 1/2 hours. Just not enough apts.

Consider yourself very fortunate Ken. You just happen to be living in an area that has lots of work. Last year I had a great year. I've only worked 4 days in the last 6 weeks. When the work is there, we can make some good money. If you lived in places like High, Floorist and myself, you'd be in our same boat. The economy has changed since the recession and I for one love where I live and will stick it out.

It's great that you've got so much work.:)

I don't believe wages or salaries can be effectively and honestly calculated in our industry because the vast majority of installers work as independent contractors or FOR independent contractors who are not accurate or honest in their IRS filings. Overwhelmingly, the "accounting" for those kinds of jobs make hourly or annual compensation comparisons useless information--------deceptive at best.

I've never even heard of installers who work on a traditional "salary" which means a fixed weekly or monthly pay. While many do work hourly virtually all of them do significant "side jobs" to supplement that reported income. Very few of the HUNDREDS of installers I've worked with throughout my life report that kind of income. It's by far mostly done with CASH. In fact my accountant told me that so long as I didn't get a 1099------just a personal check or even a business account written check I need not report that income. I've done SOME cash work over the years without reporting the income but it was never much more than 5% of my annual income hourly union or nonunion, employee or independent contractor.

In places like Florida, Texas, Arizona and California MOST of the residential work is done by immigrant labor. While there's no way to effectively estimate how much of that is illegal immigrants evading taxes you'd have to be a complete ignoramus not to understand. They are here SPECIFICALLY to undermine labor prices. Evading income taxes and related insurance is a huge part of that system of undermining YOUR standard of living.

Incognito, even here in Missouri, if you get into a city like Springfield, Kansas City or St. Louis, most of the apts and other commercial jobs are done by illegals. In Springfield, they get $2 a yd and are then back charged for transportation.
There are really no flooring unions here and no state license required for flooring installers. Most places don't require bonds or insurance either. I worked doing apts for the local housing authority for 10 years and they never asked for insurance or a city license, I had both. I am the only flooring installer to ever buy a license here. To get a city license, you gave them your name and address and plunked down $25. a year.

They (illegals) are here and they're not going away any time soon.........EVER if you want to be realistic. At this point the goal should be to manage the next wave of illegals should we ever see anything like a REAL economic recovery. We haven't been attracting so many with the stagnation out there in building and manufacturing. The open border policy is designed to severely limit the bargaining power of the AVERAGE worker out there. The elite guys can still and always will be able to make a good living in any trade if he's willing to go where the work is. Unions help somewhat to at least superficially keep up with inflation and provide health insurance and a pension.

Basically health insurance and pensions are becoming out of the reach of the blue collar worker across the board. Increased contributions to health care and now pension fund contributions gobble up anything and everything my union can negotiate for as far as raises to the next contract.
