There's not too much difference in the Better/Best lines amongst the top brands as far as quality and durability so go ahead and select whatever appeals to your eye and meets the design needs for the rest of the house.

Shaw is fine.

12 mil would be OK for normal residential use.

I stumbled across ReallyCheapFloors.com and found this video that describes the differences between Shaw's Floorte Pro LVT product series and their starting prices for each series. They seem to have very competitive prices, the lowest I have seen so far. Turns out their locations are within reasonable driving distances from me.
