How much extra carpet was required to do it that way? It probably would have looked like crap letting the pattern fall wherever.

If I’m remembering correctly 2’4” per step for pie shaped curved steps. Then you need to add for the pattern repeat. Carpet selection is key and it looks like they chose a carpet/pattern that fit well AND OF COURSE THE SELECTED INSTALLER
