That's not carpet, it's an area rug on top of the wood.

Polishes just grab dirt.

I've read stuff about polish restoring a close to new look and giving the wood a protective coating. On the other hand, all of the hardwood polishes have nightmare reviews for leaving a cloudy, sticky mess. Is there anything that can be done that does more than just cleaning it, but isn't as extreme as recoating or refinishing? (sorry if I'm using the wrong terminology.)

Just clean it with the micro pad .. The finish is going to amber as time goes on .. Nothing you can do about it .. Like E says ,Stay away from the polish..
