Fortunately, I run the photography equipment through my business (Bird Brain Photo, LLC) , so she does not see the bills. However, the cardboard boxes are harder to explain. Lately, I've taken to telling her it's "foam board" for backing prints. We've been married 34 years and believe me she knows exactly what's going on. It's just our way of not arguing about it. I know this, because I hear her talking to her mother, my mother, and my oldest daughter about my gear and how she's not supposed to know.
The bills are paid, the roof ain't leaking, and she doesn't have to carry my gear, so all is well!
My latest purchase is a complete set of studio lighting. I'm going to set up a studio in the basement as I'm starting to enjoy doing still life photography when the weather is horrible outside and during these times when I get about 45 minutes of light after work to get outside.
In reality, she's been my biggest supporter and cheerleader. She's just happy I'm getting out and improving my health and she likes to tag along when the weather is nice. She also likes to rotate her "collection" at her office, so she is always wanting a new print or two
I'm also working on multiple projects during this "short light" time of the year. I start my Indiana Master Naturalist certification in two weeks and that will run into May. I'm also working on getting my Master Photographer certification from the Professional Photographers of America which is quite an involved process with all kinds of testing and peer reviews. Lastly, I just got asked to teach a class at a local preserve that is owned by the city parks and recreation department on bird photography this summer. If it goes well, they would like me to start teaching a multi-week class on beginning photography for FWP&R. It's a paid position and I can do the class multiple times per year. It would be a 6–8-week class, meeting once per week.
So, knowing me, I'm already about 80% done with the course syllabus, the hand-outs, etc. It's been keeping me pretty busy to say the least.
It would be my dream to develop photography into a full-time career, so it was huge lift to be asked! So far, 2025 is looking pretty promising!
A special thanks to all of you here who have been extremely supportive, encouraging, and tolerant with my photography! It means the world to me!
Everybody be safe for the holiday and have a peaceful and prosperous 2025!
