Paint sprayer for base and shoe

I work fo a shop that has me painting the base and shoe that I install. The price is worth it for me to do it but using a brush or roller is for the birds so I’m about to pull the plug on a sprayer because I have a few sizable jobs coming up real soon. Don’t necessarily need one capable of painting houses or anything that demanding but I sure would like to get one that won’t bust in a month and require replacing. What experience and input do you guys have with sprayers. Any recommendations on what to get or ones to stay away from?

I bought a cheesy HVLP sprayer from Princess Auto (Harbour freight) and man that thing was the cats meow, did wood finishing with it for clear coat.... but that is all I know. It was all of 50 dollars?

The stain and sealer sprayers are significantly cheaper than ones that can shoot paint. I’m torn. The Wagner hand held sprayers seem about right but I don’t want to go too cheap either since I will be using it more than a couple weekends a year. Graco Magnum X5? Is that overkill for just base and shoe? Average job will be two to three hundred LF. Got a 450 to 500 LF job next week. I’m sure I’ll see several of those a year.

Is the wagner the black and yellow jobber, if it is my mil has one, it does rather decent.

You already know the answer though, get something better than what you think you need and then you won't hate it every time ot comes off the van man. Couple extra bucks is worth a while lot less than hating that you wasted a few less dollars.

That’s what I’m thinkin. Buy once, cry once. I just don’t want to go too cheap and regret it but then again all I’m ever gonna be painting is base and shoe.

That's the one the MIL has, like I say... it is what it is but it works ok.

If it was me, I would end up with some 2k barrel style 5 gallon sprayer.... but I'm an idiot lol

That’s about what I was thinking would work for my needs but I know I’ll use it enough to wish I bought something better right after it pisses me off and I chuck it across the street or something like that. I know me so that’s completely possible.

That would prolly be perfect for those smaller jobs. Great, now I gotta buy 2 sprayers!

Bought the $300 graco from lowes last year to paint a shed i built. Borrowed a wagner and it broke. After painting the shed i wished i had painted the outside of my house myself.

Yeah I figure a Graco is the way to go if I was gonna get a sprayer. So far I’ve painted by hand one job of shoe mold and one job of base boards and I’ve come to the conclusion that painting is for morons (unless you are a painter) regardless of whether one has a sprayer or not. Sure the sprayer is faster but where am I gonna lay out 30 16’ pieces of base all at the same time to paint them efficiently. I also have to contain any overspray as well as clean up the sprayer when I’m done. This is prolly why I’ve never painted any baseboards or shoe molding in 25 years. Don’t think I’ll be painting any more either because the reality is even after I paint, cut and hang the base it still needs caulked to the wall and touch up here n there.

I just painted all my trim in my house this last year. most was over hardwood and the rest tile and before new rug. i bought the best trim paint sherman has and used a 4 inch hotdog roller and brush to cut the top in. good paint heals well, making brushmarks a non issue. I used to have a painter i could call to come shoot a couple coats on. he would kick out drops in the driveway or yard and hit it fast. I have also brought the stuff home and finished it in my garage after work. I thought i would have more use for the sprayer but that hasnt panned out yet. made my wife promise not to tell my mother inlaw about it or I could kiss my weekends good bye.

Good paint does heal well. I’m not opposed to buying a sprayer for working on my own house but as far as painting for jobs, no thanks. Now if I did it all the time I’m sure I would develop time saving techniques but as far as I am into the floor covering game I really have no interest in starting to paint. I’m not a painter and I don’t want to become one. My speed, and money making, is in laying floors. TBH I won’t say the money was bad but it’s just not my cup of tea and these last two jobs confirmed that.

I have one of those Wagner sprayers 8 something I believe. I got it maybe 6 years ago and rellay like it, it will spray latex without thinning. But I would rather fight a herd of Republicans/ Democrats than paint, but that makes it easier. I have also sprayed poly[latex] with it.

I haven't done much painting but I've done some spraying of oil based poly.
I sprayed it on the base with my automotive touch up gun and then back brushed it. By spraying you get the material on the product quickly and you don't need to keep dipping your brush.
It's pretty easy to clean a small touch up gun.

This week I’m trimming out an entire 2000 sq ft house after I finish the floor. I’ve got maybe 35 16’ pieces to paint as well as a bunch of corner pieces. Using a 4” hotdog roller just ain’t cuttin it.

I don’t have a way to bring 16’ trim home with me otherwise I’d be like you and sippin a few beers while painting it on my own sweet time. Shit, now I need a trailer.
