Questrion on clay tile

Anyone remember the clay tile we use to install in kitchens long time ago ?
Was that Terracotta ? it use to get a pateen on it after awhile .

Terracotta is a color. Satillo tile is a common clay tile and comes in various sizes. It does patina after awhile. You can get it presealed or not sealed. There ia also a darker brown color you don't see much.

No, it is hard sun dried clay.

Terra-Cotta is both a color and a type of tile with ancient connections. Terra-Cotta means "baked earth". Popular Terra-Cotta is typically orange-ish-brown in collor but can also be brown and grey, and red, and orange with infinite variations and flashings.

Both Terra-Cotta and Saltillo are in fact usually softer than today's typical ceramic tile. Terra-Cotta and Saltillo can be either baked in a kiln or baked in the sun. Saltillo is the name of the Mexican town where the (Saltillo) product originates.

The higher the heat used in firing, the higher the density of the fired product becomes.

Both products have been severely *******ized over time.

Great explanition Bud. But down here near the southwest you would use the term satillo for the clay tiles, or maybe even clay tiles. The glazed ones are usually the fired ones, and they are used alot for counter tops, even in tub surrounds.
