Trimming woven seams

Well, it got to late to start putting them together, so for tonight I left it as is. Everything sealed up but I want to stretch and stay tack the carpet into alignment before seaming it together.
The 6 foot wide fill piece on the far side is in alignment with the nearest 7 feet of carpet. The near side starts bowing left about 3/4 inch at that point.
I've got a lotta sheetrock nails to stretch and hold it straight. Might be able to straighten it later but taking no chances.
I finished up the day by pulling rows and sealing the closet fill and the closet doorway
I'll trim and edge seal those first, then attack the long seam and start stretching.
It's a total breeze getting a seam ready to go if you can cut farther into the carpet edge. Pulling rows on the edges and the factory seam locations really sucks.
I was going to ever do lightly do a quick thermo seal on the latexed seam edges but I left the glue gun and tips at home today 🙄
If there are any issues with a seams edge gap, a tiny film of thermo can assist to bring the pile together.
Oh well.... This room will be an education when doing the other 4 rooms.

Without further ado, here's what I'm stretching into alignment.
In the second image the two green dots closest to you are parallel with the wall.
So are the second two green dots. The area between the red dots need to be aligned with the others.

NICE progress Highup ! 🙇‍♂️👍 What a shame that a Carpet One Dealer is unable to procure Latex seam sealer, but kudos to you for adapting to the reality.

The factory/ Mill probably weave extra locking stitches to the ends / selvage for
Insurance purposes.

It would be nice if they had a full inch of selvage color on each side and continued the exact same weave or structure as the rest of the carpet. I shouldn't have to wonder or question exactly where to cut. Zip it open at any point away from the edge and you can easily pull rows, chains and know exactly what you are doing.
Yeah, maybe they do it on the edges for more durability or insurance.
When I straighten that bow, I plan to pre stretch and additional 1/2 inch or so before seaming to mimic the finished stretch.
I may stretch the side opposite the seam to find out how much stretch I will actually get... That way I'll know how much to pre stretch the seam.
I didn't really want to start this job in the largest room, but I'm thinking it was the right choice because of the learning curve.
.........well, that, plus it's the only room that was ready for installation. 😁

I recall setting the KoolGlide at its lowest setting on the golf course job but then changing it to the medium setting at some point for some reason the home is heated 24/7 and I raised the temp from 65 to 68 yesterday. I have 1/8 inch tempered hardboard under the seams. This is the same situation as at the golf course.
Koolglide is a low melt type tape. How does one determine the correct heat setting with this combo?

Wool carpet, 5/15 thick.
Heated home.
Wood floor construction.
Hardboard under seam.
My equivalent of the SeamerDown used, not a seam weight.

Maybe test a scrap piece on the high setting just for kicks to see how close that is to discoloring or destroying the carpet?
No, I'm not going to use the high setting.

I always have my infrared temp gun in the truck, so I can determine how hot the carpet surface gets, but I don't know how hot is too hot for wool..... It's a wool, nylon blend I think, 85/15 %, not sure.

My sister is wise, she told me years ago, sometimes our greatest strengths can become a weakness. 🤔 I’m still trying to discern how to apply that philosophy. 😐

Highup ! You have Scientific Strengths above and beyond most. 🙇‍♂️ and this particular job requires a scientific installer. 🙇‍♂️ However, maybe this second sibling‘s quote, “cats just piss on it” 😝 can provide joking perspective, to soften the scientific overload 🤷🏻‍♂️ 😜

Can’t wait to see finished photos.

Your greatest strength turns into your fatal flaw. I think it happens when we don’t change with the times. What worked for you back then won’t always be what works for you in the future.

How many of you answer phone calls from numbers you don’t recognize? I certainly don’t. And if they don’t leave a voicemail, I’m not calling them back. Thats just how it is now.

My old man was a businessman. You answer every phone call, you respond to every message and you return every missed call. That’s how it was back then. Worked for him for his entire life and he ain’t changing now! After living with the man during the last few years of his life I can tell you that he had to have been on damn near every spam/ scam list there was out there because he answered every phone call, responded to every message and returned every missed call. One of his greatest assets turned into his fatal flaw because he wasn’t willing to change with the times.

Nice example ! …. His strength was exposed, then exploited. 😡 If I was a dictator 😜I would convict this type of white-collar crime almost as severe as murder, but instead of placing them in a normal prison. I would place them into the Deception prison, where what you see is not what you get 😝

Freedom of speech? YES ! …. Freedom to deceive? no way Jose ! ….tough to prove, but maybe something to consider 🤔
Maybe you’re found innocent for the first few incidents, but if there is a pattern of deception, guilty as charged.

I want to see em too. 😁
I can't show any till tomorrow. Not sure I'm gonna be happy. Room lighting was good, but probably too good morning light we'll determine if it flies. 🙄
That thicker side was looking fine enough to me being that I was seaming it together from the thicker looking edge onto the thinner edge.
Cleaning up tools, I was now seeing the seam from the larger piece and looking towards the 6' wide fill piece.... Looking towards the windows. In daylight, they might cast an ugly shadow along the seam. 😤
After all that time spent straightening and then pre-stretching and seaming.
......not to mention the near surgery trimming and sealing the seam.
Here it is in progress. It all went perfect.

The thicker purple area of the seam is about 5 or so rows wide on the right side fill piece.
The stripe pointed out in yellow is the seam edge on the larger main part of the carpet.
There are two windows facing east on the wall to the right. The bed might cover 7 feet of this seam, leaving 8 feet on either side of the bed.

I have the other 5+ feet to use if I want to re make, re-cut this seam and move it about 6 inches to the left. I designated a 24 foot cut to make the 6' 2" wide seam in this room.
Theoretically I can redo this fill piece making it a two piece fill and NOT using the factory edges. But then I'll need to make each piece straight to each other during the process.
I'd first need to cut out the area between the two red circles, the the circled area would become the new seam.
That's a lotta hours to make it better.... Hopefully better. No guarantees, but since I wouldn't use the factory edges it would probably be better. 🙄
Oh dear.
No, it wouldn't be free wasting 3 days on this. Who pays, the mill?
Will the problem continue onto the second roll of carpet or the balance of this first roll? 🫣

I know you’ve told us about your homemade seam weight contraption before but that was so long ago that I don’t remember. I like the vacuum hose idea to suck away the heat. Does that mean you have to listen to the shop vac blaring the entire time you’re burning a seam?

It looks fine and dandy 👍 nice work 👍
What’s going on between the two red dots
again, I must have miss read ?

For the next room, if the weave allows, make the seam between the solid gray, and one of the light gray stripes, this will disguise the seam immensely.

Looks fabulous, leave it ! 🐶 😜
