Bet it is a toe kick on a cabinet where it don't show. Might be a stove slot by looking at the stain.

So funny. That looks like my setup yesterday. No kidding.
At the far end I used my 8 foot 4x4 to span a sliding glass door. I only had 5 tubes with me so I used a 30" piece of 4x4 to make the stretcher long enough. On the stretched end, I only had to go 8 feet across that end of the room...... better than running home to get my other tubes. I'd taken them out cause I haven't worked on carpet for a few weeks and had my saws in the rig.

Was it laid on a T&G floor which should have been sanded?
I'm betting its the new Mohawk 'carpet of the future' that is loose layed with no tackstrip or stretching required.
Thought it might have been a full spread glue lay as a vinyl backing was mentioned
