I don't think safe mode option comes up on this confuzer.
FYI: Just some rambling about stuff I've tried.
I removed both sticks of RAM, one stick at a time. I reinstalled them one at a time alternating the slots. One RAM, two Rams, swapped sockets with each....... that made no difference.

I removed the CPU's fan, unlocked the processor's release lever 5 or 6 times........... figuring possibly a connection issue. I put a thin smear of dielectric grease on the heat sink, reinstalled the fan and that also made no changes.

If I shut the confuzer off, it may take anywhere from one to fifteen attempts to log in.

If the confuzer has been on for a while and seems to be slowing down or not loading a page, I can hit ctrl+alt+delete and it may take 20 to 45 seconds for task manager to come up.
However from a fresh restart, task manager appears almost instantly. The longer the computer has been running, the longer it takes for task manager to appear.

The two Windows XP CDs I have are not compatible with this confuzer, so no help there.

Confuzer is a 2002 Gigabyte with W XP Pro and Pentium 4.

HI, do you have a printer installed? A while back, on an XP Pro machine I still run, I had an HP update that was eating my processor alive. Found it by studying the task manager, then googling. I mistakenly tried to remove something (don't remember what it was, but think it was the printer update). Eventually removed and re-installed the printer. Working well now.

Nothing is overly busy in task manager other than when Firefox is loading up a page.

Safe mode should come up .. Download Speccy .. Check CPU.. Lets see if you are over heating ..

You can also download R Kill .. It will stop any Virus from running ..

If you think you may be Infected , Let me know ..
This is an Everest screenshot of the temps and voltages. Nothing looks hot to me.
2nd is the CPU usage. Right now I got a ton of stuff open (look at bottom of the screenshot) and CPU usage isn't bad at all.
When the computer gets close to freezing up, and it may do so with only two web pages open, and none of this other stuff open.
I'll add another image when the CPU is going wild.

Open Device Manager to check on the status of your graphics card. Open Windows' Control Panel, click "System and Security" and then click "Device Manager." Open the "Display Adapters" section, double click on the name of your graphics card and then look for whatever information is under "Device status." This area will typically say, "This device is working properly." If it does not say this, take note of whatever warning or error might be listed there to seek help.

I checked that long ago and it still says working properly... everything says "working properly" but something's not working properly.
Reading about the graphics card, it mentions issues such as freezing and unusual screen displays. I have those so that's why I was asking.

An example is like this. If I have a couple of web pages loading up, or just a single tab loading up a web page, being on dialup, I of course have to wait for it.
If I am reading this website while waiting for two other pages to load up. I will keep checking back to see if they have loaded. When I realize those other pages will simply never finish loading, I'll open task manager and when I do, something immediately happens......... the screen goes black....... totally black, except for the blue swirly icons at the top of the screen, showing the pages are still loading.
A few seconds later, the task manager will still be there, but the rest of the screen goes back to normal. When I hit task manager under slow loading situations and the screen goes black, I know that the CPU graph will be going crazy ups and downs.
.......... OK, if the screen does as I just mentioned and doesn't
freeze up, often I can get things back to normal by closing the open web pages, disconnecting the connection, then reconnecting and starting my searches over.
....or I reboot the computer then start from scratch.
In a nutshell, when I sense the computer is slowing, I always know that when I open task manager, the screen will go black at least for a few seconds and any icons showing tabs where pages are loading will still be spinning, showing pages are loading.
I use Firefox, so that explains the swirling icons on each open tab. Odd that the icons remain active even when the screen goes black.
I'd consider that a possible graphics issue, hence me asking about the graphics card.

Under devices, the processor shows it's working fine too.

If everything I look at says working properly, and assuming that they are correct, what's left, the XP program and missing or corrupt drivers?

I had trouble with the update of Firefox so went back to an older version
If i pushed say P I could count to 11 before it showed on the screen, then pushed Y then after counting to 11 again the Y showed on the screen
Once I had gone back to an older version of Firefox No problems

Hi, be sure and check on whether or not Malwarebytes is installed. That sounds a lot like the problems I was having. It was caused by a bad update and I had to uninstall and then put the program back on. Worth looking at.

I haven't used the program for 9 months and it doesn't have real time scanning or automatic updates if that makes a difference. It's version 2.2.1.1043 2014ish?
