Premeditated mass shootings in public places are happening more often, some researchers say, plunging towns and cities into grief and riveting the attention of a horrified nation. In general, though, fewer Americans are dying as a result of gun violence — a shift that began about two decades ago.

In 1993, there were seven homicides by firearm for every 100,000 Americans, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. By 2013, that figure had fallen by nearly half, to 3.6 — a total of 11,208 firearm homicides. The number of victims of crimes involving guns that did not result in death (such as robberies) declined even more precipitously, from 725 per 100,000 people in 1993 to 175 in 2013.

Older data suggests that gun violence might have been even more widespread previously. The rate of murder and manslaughter excluding negligence reached an apex in 1980, according to the FBI. That year, there were 10.8 willful killings per 100,000 people.

The difference is, with social media, internet, and faster international/national news reporting, we are hearing about more of them than we did in the past. So it sounds like crime is going up.

Another problem is, there is so much sensationalism and hullaballoo created that it gives attention to the killers. And some of them just want attention regardless of whether it is positive or negative. They want to be remembered and make a dent on history. So, they do something nutso like this to try to get their names in the history books.

In the 25 years before Australia's gun grab, there were 84 killed in mass killings by shooting, and 15 by arson. That's a total of 99, or 3.96 per year.

In the 21 years after their gun grab, there were 15 killed with guns, 36 by fire, 10 stabbing, 12 unknown, 5 blunt force, 4 by gasoline, and 6 by vehicle. That's a total of 88, or 4.19 per year.

Mass killings by fire more than doubled, so I'd call that "skyrocketing". The other means didn't even exist, to that's huge increase as well.

Killers will kill. Period.

I will stick with living in New Zealand thanks where nobody carries a gun, some police have started carrying guns in the boots of the police cars, also its very hard to get a gun here and nobody finds the need to carry a gun

You don't hunt small game?

I have rabbits all over my yard and I live in the middle of town. A few years ago, I saw some deer on the corner of my block. The hunters harvest several hundred deer in my county every year and they need to be thinned out more. There are car-deer wrecks daily.

I've had to use a gun to protect my property (and myself) although I never had to shoot anyone. Just had to scare them away.

Although yesterday morning a guy who should have had his guns taken away for "accidentally" killing his friend who just happened to have had an affair with his wife ended up "stumbling" and "accidentally" shooting and killing a woman in the woods not too far from my home.

In the first incident, he didn't report that he'd shot the guy and just left the body in the woods overnight and then it was found. He initially claimed his friend had committed suicide and when they discovered he'd been shot with a different gun, the guy admitted he shot him but said it was an accident. Police didn't even bother to press any charges against him.

Birds of a feather flock together and crap on your car.

When I'm feeling down, I like to whistle. It makes the neighbor's dog
run to the end of his chain and gag himself.

If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the
right time, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.

The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight, because by then
your body and your fat have gotten to be really good friends.

The easiest way to find something lost around the house is to buy a
replacement.

He who hesitates is probably right.

If you can smile when things go wrong, you have someone in mind to

There's always a lot to be thankful for if you take time to look for
it. For example I am sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles
don't hurt.

Did you ever notice:
When you put the 2 words "The" and "IRS" together it spells "Theirs."

A man called to testify at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), asked his accountant for advice on what to wear.

"Wear your shabbiest clothing. Let him think you are a pauper," the accountant replied.

Then he asked his lawyer the same question, but got the opposite advice. "Do not let them intimidate you. Wear your most elegant suit and tie."

Confused, the man went to his Priest, told him of the conflicting advice, and requested some resolution of the dilemma.
"Let me tell you a story," replied the Priest.

"A woman, about to be married, asked her mother what to wear on her wedding night. 'Wear a heavy, long, flannel nightgown that goes right up to your neck.' But when she asked her best friend, she got conflicting advice. Wear your most sexy negligee, with a V neck right down to your navel."

The man protested: "What does all this have to do with my problem with the IRS?!"

"Simple", replied the Priest...

"It doesn't matter what you wear, you are going to get screwed!"

"According to Bruce Kobayashi and Joseph Olsen in the Stanford Law and Policy Review:
"Prior to 1989, the term "assault weapon" did not exist in the lexicon of firearms. It is a political term developed by anti-gun publicists to expand the category of "assault rifles"."

"Thomas Jefferson’s “Assault Rifle” – The Girardoni Air Rifle

The Girardoni air rifle was 22-shot, magazine-fed, nearly silent .46 caliber repeating rifle adopted in 1780 by the Austrian Army. Thomas Jefferson purchased two of these rifles, which he sent west with Lewis and Clark.

Is it capable of firing 22 aimed shots in a minute? Got it!
Is it a military weapon? Got it!
Was it manufactured during the American Revolutionary War? Got it!

I am concerned about how the terminology used of a semi automatic weapon is always deliberately misconstrued as an "assault weapon".

Snip; "An AR-15 platform is not an assault weapon although its been cosmetically changed to look like one. The AR in “AR-15” rifle stands for ArmaLite rifle, after the company that developed it in the 1950s. “AR” does NOT stand for “assault rifle” or “automatic rifle.”

Truthfully it is almost exactly like an old remington semi automatic sport rifle of the late 1900's.

Guy talking about the Las Vegas shooting.....I heard on our local radio station after the Las Vegas shooting: "That in Arizona if you had that many guns and that amount of ammunition you'd be considered low on both".

When Homeland bought AR 15s for their people, they classified them as "defense rifles". When ordinary people buy them they are called "assault rifles". Hmmmm

This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future! – Adolph Hitler, 1935, on The Weapons Act of Nazi Germany

Quote:

"The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subordinate people to possess arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subordinate people to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by so doing. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that the supply of arms to the underdogs is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let's not have any native militia or native police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order throughout the occupied Russian territories, and a system of military strong-points must be evolved to cover the entire occupied country." --Adolf Hitler, dinner talk on April 11, 1942, quoted in Hitler's Table Talk 1941-44: His Private Conversations
