LA was a near uninhabitable desert converted into something it was never meant to be.

This is my entire point. So while everyone else is talking about this’s n that’s for being the reason why the city burned, all I can think is you live somewhere that was never meant to be inhabited in this manner. I feel the exact same way about living in Phoenix. 6 million people living in the desert ain’t right. The desert also burns and we’re pulling from the same water source as LA.

There’s a town here that has no water infrastructure. They have to pay to have it trucked in. You look at the current mess the entire SW is in and all I can think of is how crazy people are when I see yet another house being built out there.

My new building and zoning regulations have just 4 requirements.

Must be made of cement or other masonry materials and rebar or steel Quonset hut)

A limit of one avocado, orange, lemon or peach tree per property...... One tree, not one of each.

I was a Democrat for years and then the party left me. They got more radical and anti-constitution every year. Luckily, I live in a Republican state. We have constitutional carry. Gun registration is illegal. That means a lot to me. We don't coddle criminals.

...I'm 67 and still exhaling pollutants.
...oh wait, it's not pollutant anymore. It's nutrients for trees just like it was 4 years ago and every year before it.
I've been a lifelong Democrat until this election cycle. Mom and dad were Democrats , so I signed up as one.
I hardly ever voted Democrat, but living in an eternal Blud state, I decided it was time to make a statement and officially change parties. I guess I wasn't alone. Every state moved more redder last year.
I'm I older, but my views haven't wandered much over the years.
I live 6 air miles from where we lived after I was born and ill never live anywhere else. I'll retire six feet closer to China.
Only thing that's changed is that both photography and trying to get lost in the wilderness came to an end. Messing with, tuning and modifying my old truck and it's engine morphed into just maintenance of my current truck. Thrills have sorta gone by the way side, so I just put one foot in front of the other and continue forward.

I can appreciate that. Guns is one of the things I’ve altered my views of as I’ve gotten older. When I was younger I would CC. 30 years later and I don’t anymore. Not because I don’t believe in guns or anything like that. I don’t carry anymore because I don’t want to shoot anyone. Still gotta gun but I would rather alter my route or plans to avoid trouble if it means I don’t have to carry.

Sure. I was having a drink and thinking about how things have changed throughout the years. Then I thought about how I’ve changed myself and my thoughts on life.

The homeless situation isn't helped by legalizing drugs like Oregon did.... The lawmakers found out it doesn't work and did an about face.

I'm talking drug-drugs. Loosening up the laws with no real "punishment".....or options for offenders doesn't help correct the issue either.
I see the problem partly as a monetary one.
Our sheriff closes the office one day a week. He has no choice. People wouldn't vote to increase funds. Without more staff, they just let 30+ inmates out of jail.
So, what do we do if we can't fund the police?
I'd say the inmates need a trade school while incarcerated. Homeless druggies could be offered a trade school option instead of jail.

We need to bring back the poor farms. Say what you want about them but they kept the riffraff outta downtowns and I believe the majority of them were profitable. A rebranding would bring them into the 21st century.

Sounds good on paper but when the city went to crap because of it they had to rethink their position. Happens. That’s what this thread is all about, right. Sounds good on paper but when the city went to crap because of it they had to rethink their position. Happens. That’s what this thread is all about, right. Unfortunately the state of Oregon learned that lesson the hard way, and at the taxpayers expense.

It’s the epic failures that teach us the most. so in one way, we actually need Oregon to show us what’s not working. We need volunteer think tanks to expose the epic failures no matter what state or city it is and also expose the epic success stories, where the cities or states are getting it right. Then this think tank sends their recommendations to the Cities and states that need improvement, as for finding the funds to finance the solutions, I guess the think tanks could provide recommendations for that. Also, I believe the answer is to get our citizens involved as volunteers not paid contractors with no insensitive to succeed.

As a sidenote, may be some of this Trump, excessive fear tactics, like threatening the petty drug dealer, or a drug user with outrageous sentences or fines, and then give them a probation period to straighten themselves out by finding a job or signing up to a trade school. If they fail the trade school and do not find a job within the probation period, then maybe ship them to El Salvador as a penalty ….Can you guys believe I just said that …. However, I believe the government needs to find companies who are willing to hire these misfits. Maybe give them tax breaks and security guards paid for by the government to manage the misfits. Until they can prove themselves to move on to other approved companies, willing to take the misfit graduates. That was all talk texting, so I hope it makes sense.

I’m gonna agree with you on the fact that failure is how we learn. Problem is are we electing the right people that already know this stuff so we, the taxpayers, don’t have to pay for some clown to learn on our dime.

I don’t want to think that I’m some comapshionless mofo but damn if every time someone gets feelings for the less than fortunate, it ends up costing us all a pretty penny. Life is more of a process with intended directions, that we need to observe, be curious about, understanding and give it time before judging. If we try to force results onto the opposition, we only create an enemy, rather than an adversary, both moving towards a process for improvement. Hopefully that makes sense peace out .

.......terrible thing is that this was put on a ballot and people actually voted for it.
Originally, it was to include a choice, either jail or rehab. I don't think that part was ever put on the bill. Costly? Uh, ....yeah, but it would have helped some, probably many.

I'd much rather have a different state than Oregon do these experiments. We aren't even experimenting.... We copy California.
