I hope the rest of your vacation goes smoothly, Tom.

Staycations are my preference. Traveling always stressed me out. I like seeing new places but the packing, lugging stuff around, worrying about stuff getting stolen, actually having stuff get stolen, hotel sheets like sandpaper, hotel mattresses like rocks, having to share a hotel room with my snoring brother who had to sleep with the lights on/curtains open, and AC off so it's hot as hell. LOL.

Every time I saw the word Orcon I thought of Orca and pictured Shamoo at Sea World.

I'm up early. My ISP is continuing to miscalculate bandwidth. Had my computer off most of the day, phone on airplane mode, mom's computer was shut off, & my brother's computer has BitMeter and showed he wasn't using much data. It now says we've used over 120Gb. We are using less bandwidth than usual but it's taking more. Something is definitely wrong with their calculations.

I'm waiting for my mother to wake up and for her to decide whether or not she will act like an adult today.
To me, Orcon sounds like a place Captain Kirk visited.

It kind of does sound like that as well-- especially if it has a number after it.

I went to visit my friend and give him his late Xmas gift. I went to his house first but he was at work. Didn't go inside bc they said the baby has had a fever for a week. His gf has barely worked at the casino 2 weeks and is already planning to quit. She only lasted a couple weeks at her last job before quitting. She's not employable anywhere in town because of how often she quits. Her complaint about the casino is that they don't let her take breaks.

When I was trying to leave my friend's house, the one-eyed kitten Nightmeow kept chasing after me and trying to get in my truck. I kept putting him back on the porch but he kept following. I finally asked someone to hold him until I left so he wouldn't get run over trying to follow me.

I've got his kitty up in my face right now.

We ran out of her treats so she's been all up in my space wanting more & not understanding they are gone. She even grabbed my hand and pulled it to the empty treat jar earlier.

Highup, she's a mutt from a semi-feral cat colony. She looks a LOT like her mother, but her mother had more white on her. She's some sort of tuxedo- like tabby. She makes the most adorable sounds. You know how mother cats coo at their kittens? She makes that sound at people. And sort of a rolled R sound when she meows. She's an absolute sweetheart. When I'm not feeling well she comes up and very gently licks my face right above my nose and between my eyebrows up to my forehead.

I filled out an online form to request my father's dd214s because we can't find them. It's a little confusing on filling stuff out because it wanted to know if he was enlisted or an officer, was he active service or reserves, etc. Thing is, he was both. He enlisted for active service and upon completion of active service joined the reserves and became a Major who was in charge of an entire reserve unit. During the Gulf War, it was the only reserve unit in the region that was deemed battle ready. I'm not sure about the dates of his reserve service though. Mom said he was in the reserves before they married so it would have been before 1970 but he got out of 'nam in 1968. So, I'm guessing 69. I think he was with the reserves until 92 when we transferred overseas. I did leave some notes about my confusion in the "other information" section though.

A year and a half or two ago I bought a GB multimeter at the pawn shop for $4 bucks.
It's never read correctly.... on volts DC anyway.
I've had another GB meter for over 6 er 9 years, or whatever.
I've always trusted this one.
I took the back off the $4 one. The 9 volt battery inside the meter, barely read 5 volts and the fuse was blown so it couldn't measure amps.
Here's my cheapo meter. I noticed something kind of strange. Poor design. I'm reminding you, I'm just a carpet dude.
See anything wrong with the layout or placement of the electronics?

Mark might have....
At the top of the case, opposite the battery, there is a variable resistor.
It's a little white thing at the top that sticks up higher than anything else on the circuit board. It not only sticks up but it's right near where the back cover of this unit clicks into place.
The meter was not reading correctly as it had 12.41 volts when my other ear read 12.64 volts. With 12 volt automotive batteries that's a lot of difference.
Anyway that little white Gizmo at the top is a variable resistor and my first hunch was to 'vary' the resistor. The adjusting mechanism turned with very little resistance. wink, wink, nod, nod 😁
Anyhow I turn this variable resistor to the right and got 9.3 volts, then to the left and got 14.1 volts...... and then to the right and to the left and then left and to the right and eventually ended up with the meter reading 12.61 volts. My other meter was reading 12.64 volts. Not perfect, but that's way closer than it was and pretty much close enough for me and what I need.
Why did they use such a large variable resistor that could be so easily mis adjusted by accidently bumping it, .... it's right near where the back cover connects to the body of this unit. By simply removing and replacing the cover plate, when replacing the battery, your fingers or the cover plate could touch this resister and change the meters reading and accuracy.
Why not make this resistor smaller, and put it here or here....anywhere else, so that your fingers or the backing cover plate can't get anywhere near it when replacing the battery for the fuse.
And like I said I'm a carpet layer.

It's further complicated by the fact that his original documents were destroyed in a fire at the NPRC in Louisville where his records were being kept. Records of his years of service were not supposed to have been affected but when he requested some documents he was told that they were burned in the fire. Then after he got some restored/re-issued, his office was burned in the 80s and he had some of his awards and documents there because he thought it would be safe. Didn't count on the BOP being too cheap to install a sprinkler system in his office building. I had some other veterans claim he must be a liar if he said the records burned in NPRC, but the thing is, it's just the sort of weird bad luck my family has. Out of all the students in my college, I was the only one who got a coursework book with misprinted pages. Just so happened to be pages that the teacher issued assignments from as well. I showed her my book, she compared it to hers, then she had other students bring theirs over to look. I shrugged and said "just my luck". Anyway, my father had superior officers he worked under vouch for him, he's shown me photos of his days as a veteran, and before his death he was in contact with people he'd served with. He still had his uniforms & other stuff as well. Plus some of his awards that were not at the office when it burned. He received 21 air medals during Vietnam.

The circuitboard brings back memories of high school electronics class. We never learned about variable resisters though. We made a bug that transmitted on a radio frequency-- rather large board for it though-- at least 3"x4". Pretty crude. But, I know I've forgotten a lot since its been close to 30 years. But, what you are saying about the positioning is a good point.

I used to have a picture signature on some forums that was a drawing I did in paint of a capacitor telling a resister "Resistance is futile" but I can't seem to find it anymore. It disappeared.

My brother woke me up asking where Namir was because he'd gotten out of the front room again. We found him and put him back. He came out when I went to brush my teeth. My gums are hating on me for eating pork. When eat beef or pork it gets stuck in my teeth pretty badly & my gums get sore even if I clean my teeth out right away. Had some meat get stuck that I couldn't get out and the gums around my top right back molars are bleeding when I brush/floss. There was a lot of red in the sink last night and this morning. I used my prescription mouthwash and toothpaste. I also took something to reduce swelling and hope it will work. I started sneezing a few minutes ago and got a sinus headache.

Thanks man.

When I got to the hotel my reservation was cancelled due to the card it was under being deactivated. After some searching, they found my FedEx envelope that had my new card in it. I was definitely stressed out after the drive with all the moron driver's (they don't use signals and don't move from the passing lane in the south!!)
The front desk girl was amazing!! Got me back in business and found my card for me. I was just glad to get out of the damn SUV and lay down. I have family and friends I could count on to send me money in an emergency but I didn't want to burden anyone, you know? "Hey Ma, can you get out of bed and western union me 5 grand?" Lol

Everything is all worked out....for now. When I get home I'll have to switch all my autopay bills to this new card. That'll be a pain in the ass I'm sure.
Today I spent the morning taking a swim with the kid ( it's 85 here!!) And the afternoon catching little lizards also with my kid. 😂16409023044434194302537951252402.jpg16409023811283387079813320421304.jpg

Not a bad way to spend some time in December!!! Piss on the snow and cold!!!

Havasu, I don't know what I'd do if I became allergic to cats and dogs. I wouldn't want to live without my fur babies. I guess I'd just have to find stronger allergy meds. I think a big part of the problem is there's too much dust & lint in the house. I need to clean up.

Tom, since I live in the south I can confirm the insane drivers. There are some places I hate going bc the drivers are such jerks. As you said, no turn signals, the hog the passing lane (while going under speed limit), and if you do use a turn signal, they will speed up to block you from getting over (which is probably part of why so many people no longer use turn signals). I'll have people suddenly merge in front of me with no warning and I'll say "Ya out of blinker fluid, *******?" OR they will slow down majorly or even come to a complete stop to get in to the turn lane without any signal to warn you.

Highup, that app would come in handy for me. Even just a magnifier would help.

Rusty, St Louis is where my father's records were. As I said, his weren't in the years that were supposed to have been affected, but when he did a records request they said his were destroyed in the fire. I wonder if they were just too lazy to look. But, I've put in the request via a website.

Felt pretty crappy today but feeling a bit better now. Made some soup I'm going to try in a few minutes.

Ooh, found my sketch:

That’s so you can read the menu at restaurants. I need that app😳
It's excellent. Tap the light bulb and it illuminates what you're viewing with the flash light.
Check it out. I'm amazed easily, but I'm pressed. Better and faster than taking an image with your phone, then enlarging it.
