Just an update.... Customer is back in town for the next month and a half and still wants me do this repair.
I'd still like some input if anyone has an answer on the last image I posted here..about the width of the lip on a lap joint.
There is a utility closet where I can remove one 42" plank. That would be enough for the repairs.
The only flooring they have for this repair are two leftover stair treads.
Here's a better look at what I want to do.
Originally I was thinking about making up the repair pieces totally from scratch using the two leftover one-piece stair treads and using a combination of spline and lap joints.
Now, using one plank from the closet, I can use the original locking joints in the width and just need to machine the upper and lower joints using a lap joint.

Back to my question........ how wide should I make the lap joints?
3/16", 1/4", 5/16" ?View attachment 7736

How wide are the lap joint from the 42" plank

I'll study the joint next time I'm there to look at it's profile. I'm thinkin' closer to 3/16" for the lap.
I'm gonna use a section of the one piece stair tread to do the smaller patch. If it works good, I'll do the larger repair using a board from the pantry. Not sure if maybe a slow set epoxy might be stronger than wood glue.
I'm not worried about doing this thing quickly. Just want it to look good.

A epoxy might burn a hole in it .. :D We use to use regular Elmers white glue to put patches in the lanes .. Never had a problem ..

I might have to do a test with it. Titebond II seems to be the ticket for prefinished wood floor joints. I'm just not sure what bonds best to the core of a lock together laminate.

I've always used Titebond II. When I think of Elmers, I think of 2nd grade art. :D
Project is 75% complete. I will share some images when it's all done if I can get em off of my phone. Flip phones are a pita for photo use.
This job has had my brain hurting like no other job has. ...and the things I learn from this job, I will probably never use it again.

We use to use Elmers all the time Hi to put patches in the lanes .. I use Titebond II to glue and pin nail spline .and other stuff in wood floors ..

.....what I said about Elmers? It wasn't just me. :D

"Elmer's white glue is intended more for construction paper and dried macaroni.

We didn't use any mechanical fasteners for the board replacements in the lanes Hi.. Never a problem.. And there was 15 lb balls dropped on them every day ..
Don't get me wrong , I like TB..

Got my project completed today. Access to the work area was via the backside of the house. Distance traveled each trip was probably 80+ feet and up 16 stairs to the deck.
My trips carrying out all my tools late this afternoon just about did me in. ......2 straightedges, three routers, my table saw table, two table tops for my router and for my spline cutting setup, the vacuum and hose, the clamps, compressor hose and brad nailer lots of misc clamps wood for shims, and guides........... and so on and so on. Way too much crap just to 'slap' in a few planks. :D

Here's the before photo.
............well apparently not!

Error says my jpg is too large for the server to process...
................ I have shrunk it down to 500X375 (327KB) What gives? any smaller and it can't be seen!
