This is how the factory ships them. They are also packaged this way on a new tool. The problem is that most guys wrap them around the tool very tightly, and or yank them out of the wall when they are done using them, and over time it breaks the copper down and then they will make intermittent contact based on how you position the chord. They are pretty simple to replace. Just make sure you take the "chord minder" sleeve off the old one and slide it over the new one. This will insure a good fit where the chord inserts into the tool.

I've just coiled mine in a circle like I've always done with other tools and extension cords. Never around the tool.
Years ago I had a 25 foot extension cord coil itself into a 25 foot long cord resembling an old telephone handset cord. It's like they twist the copper wire counterclockwise, and I coil it clockwise. Why this stapler cord and one extension cord....... No other tool or extension cords have ever done this.
