My bro went for his job interview. There were 3 people doing interview: 2 men with hard hats and a woman who was in an extremely bad mood. She came out and started yelling at people not to use their cellphones while waiting-- but no one in there was using cellphones. She didn't even bother to read my brother's job application & asked him questions that were already answered but didn't even listen to his answers. She snapped at him about how he never worked anywhere longer than 6 months after he told her he worked at Walmart for 9 months, Fred's for about a year (can't remember exactly how long) and Pizza Hut for 3 years. She then told him his job history was not compatible with employment there and threw his file in the bin and told him to get out. She was rejecting every applicant who went in. Meanwhile, guys who had no work experience whatsoever got hired by the guys with hard hats. While talking to another friend, he told us that the same lady rejected him when he applied for the job. But, my brother still has another application in for a different position there & he knows someone who might be able to help push his application through. If he doesn't get the miserable witch again, he might still get hired.

Habitat recycle store had a 1970's era Craftsman radial arm saw motor for $25. Not sure what I'm gonna use it for yet, just couldn't pass it up.
I think they were advertised at 2 3/4 HP. It's 3450 RPM
HP has always been exaggerated in motors. In reality using amp ratings , it's less than 1 1/2/HP
Still an excellent motor. Tight, no end slop and sounds smoooooth.
What should I make with it? 4 inch belt sander, drum sander, disk sander, grinder wheel
........margarita mixer?
105 HI. I went out, checked oil and water on my minivan and put in some Freon. Then trimmed a tree. Wife says I am nuts. Also started cleaning the table saw.

Around 3pm we were at 73 degrees, then I saw high fog blowing overhead off the coast and an hour later we were at 66.6............... that blew off ans it's 6 pm and we're at 70. Tomorrow is supposed to be warmer.

That saw, Floorist. Says 2.7 HP? Pretty decent saw for most purposes and you couldn't ever beat that price.
I paid $25 for an old saw motor. I think it's original rating was about the same. Doing some research on HP, the true power is told by the motor's amp rating.
It's embarrassing that Craftsman rates my shop vac at 6.5 "peak" HP................ it can't be even 1/6th of that.

Played McGuyver after work and converted a 45 year old Craftsman jigsaw into a sort of scroll saw so I can cut laminate inside the house I'm working at instead of running outside for every cut. I don't do enough laminate to make it worthwhile to buy a laminate cutter. Not sure how it's gonna work because I need to get some blades for it. It was my Dad's old saw and the foot on it broke 15 years ago. I kept it because the tool still runs. Hopefully the LaminateCutterDownNow2018 works as designed. Guess I'll find out tomorrow.
Basically, the jigsaw hangs upside down from a 12" by 24" plywood table which resides on 10 inch tall supports and the blade points upwards towards my face. Cool.
Kind of a foot stool with a saw mounted to it. I won't even have to get off my knees.

Yup. If it works I may make a few improvements like a built in switch. Just gonna use a power strip with a switch for now and lock the jigsaw switch in the on position.

I have one but haven't used it. Not sure how they would work compared to a jig saw for cutting laminate flooring. I'm thinking their blades are too wimpy to force material into.
Whipped it together and was 10 x noisier than I expected. I discovered tonight the blade holder was gently kissing the plywood table top the saw is mounted to on each stroke making it resonate like a bad drum.
I used my router to cut the plywood a little deeper in that area, then enclosed the front and back making a box. Before, it was a top with two sides as it's support. Saw noise wasn't contained. Now it is. I lined the insides of the box with 1/4" cork and I'll set the saw contraption on a carpet scrap when I use it. It's gonna be a lot quieter.
I'll give it a better workout tomorrow and use a different blade. The blade I used has teeth sharp as a piranha. Tiny teeth with no offset. Makes a clean cut, but cuts slow and the teeth have no rake so that allows the laminate to flutter a tiny bit it you don't apply downward pressure while cutting. I think a more normal blade design will pull the planks down to the table better.

Highup, sounds like you did well with that MacGyvering. I'd love to see a picture of it. I'm always impressed when people do stuff like that.
I spent the day recovering from yesterday's trip to Alexandria and Lake Charles. Took my bro and some friends to get their TWIC cards. In order to apply for certain jobs, people have to get these cards. Only way to get them is to go to Lake Charles to go to a small office, fill out paperwork, pay $120 and then wait for the card to be sent in the mail. No physicals or anything, it just costs $ and people have to be able to get to Lake Charles. So, if someone doesn't have $ for the card or gas to get to and from there, they are screwed as you can't apply or pay for it online. The Alexandria trip was bc one of my friends couldn't find his birth certificate so we had to go to the courthouse there to get it. Fortunately, once we got to the courthouse it didn't take long to get it and then it didn't take long at the TWIC card place so we headed back.
My brother then had a friend fix his tail light. It wouldn't come on. Opened up the housing and found that it had a crack in it and the light was full of water-- shorting it out. They put a new bulb in and sealed the crack with silicone-- he's ordered new tail lights in case it doesn't hold. His VTM-3 and cruise control weren't working before, but now that the light is fixed, they are working again. He thought he was going to have to spend hundreds of $ to get it fixed, but the tail light issue fixed it. Once that was fixed, he was able to get a new inspection sticker-- someone scraped his old one off for some reason. His truck was left unlocked when he was getting it worked on somewhere and people vandalized his truck when he was at work in the past (ripped trim off of it and stuff).

Nick, you'd think they would do background checks or something. All they require are proof of citizenship (birth cert & ID or SS card OR a passport) and the $120. People could probably come in with fake IDs and stuff to get it. It really seems like some sort of a scam to me in some ways. I don't think my brother's mooching friend would last at one of those jobs. He couldn't even last at McDonalds or Walmart bc he doesn't know how to listen. He can't follow simple instructions & feels the need to "correct" and argue with people when he doesn't know WTF he's talking about.
