Those devastated structures that fell into the path of the hurricane Ian could have been built a lot more solid--------considering they probably ought not build anything there at all WTHOUT the proper structural integrity. I see a lot of Little Pigs still building houses of straw and sticks---------in the path of regular tropical storms ON THE BEACH.

Kills me that it gives Old Sleazy Joe another excuse to print a hundred billion dollars.

Private market wouldn't touch that insurance.

I say people could build nice homes there, pretty much anywhere, but not the basic stick frame homes with drywall and carpet. THATS what so pathetic when I see these inevitable "disasters".

In 92, I put carpet in most of a sale barn that sold livestock. During the flood of 93, the place had 2 feet of water standing in it. After the water went down they tried to blame me because the glue-direct carpet came loose.

I was talkin with the old man about the storm and why someone would live there knowing that every year you could potentially lose it all. I wish no harm upon anyone but damn if those people don’t deserve what Mother Nature dishes out. I bought a house far enough inland specifically because of that.

It’s not just Florida. I was looking at condos right there on the ocean in Myrtle Beach for $70K then I thought about the possibility of losing it every year. What do we get maybe 10 hurricanes a season? That’s 10 rolls of the dice EVERY year. Could be Charleston, could be Houston, could be the Outter Banks or New Orleans. Im sure it’s magical to live in those places but damn if that isn’t just an unnecessary risk to take and then you watch these people on the news crying about how they lost everything… but they’re gonna rebuild

It cost quite a bit more to build a house with heavy gauge steel and concrete. You absolutely could not make those "affordable" in the context of competing against stick frame. So in a "free market" buyers will choose the underbuilt structure which eventually gets wiped out by routine flooding and winds.

At the same time that marginal difference in construction costs is a one off. Properly constructed homes would still get some residual effects from extreme weather events. They would not be blown away like Japan in a Godzilla movie. But look at these entire communities now. How are those cost savings calculated now?
