We did a horrendous tile rip up today. Ceramic over 3/8” plywood, over vct.

Zan, after I joined the router forum I noticed a lot of newbies asking questions about routers..... Not The woodworking kind. 😁
You would think they would notice that the page has pictures of wood and tools and understand that it's not a computer forum. 😁

I’ve never seen tile stick to plywood like this.
Plywood was put down with screws and 4” framing nails. We got the big room done yesterday , I’ll be back at it again, in a course hours 🙄. It would have come up better in their was 3/4” ply under it, instead of 3/8”.
Tools that worked the best... b f pry bars and b f hammer.
I’m getting too old for this shit!

One day I’m going to reno my bathroom and I think I’m going to hit a similar issue. I know the top layer is linoleum and relatively recent. But under this is 1/4 inch plywood and another layer of linoleum. House was built in 1978 so there’s the concern of asbestos. So it’s not happening soon

A buddy sent me this picture and it kinda sums up some of what we’re seeing with not being able to find help. Drove past a Wendy’s today and they have a $300 hiring bonus. Gotta do what you gotta do if you want people to work for you, right. I’ve never gotten a hiring bonus in the trades.

Got the rip up done. We left the vct down ( for now)in the smaller area because of the nasty black tar paper Shit.
Did some underlayment, out the door by 3:30.

Yes it was tested, no asbestos. They did a core drill through all layers.
What is the purpose of the tar paper, under the tile? vapor retarder? It appears they glued down the tar paper , and then glued the vct to the paper.
I’ve seen this fairly often, never thought about it much.

My riding mower has a broken drive belt. I was wondering how I was going to push it up on my trailer. The shop that works on mowers, on the rare occasion that I don't do it, said they would pick up and deliver for $15. Let them do it. While it is there, I will have them put the new tires on that I bought.

Best I can tell is it is a hold out from lining felt from old linoleum installations. Used to be used for smoothing subfloor and the like but that is just my best guess

If you go WAY back in linoleum history all wood substrates required a layer of felt over the wood. I've seen a few older, resilient floors laid over a tar paper. Whenever we laid VAT/VCT over hardwood or other moving substrates the white felt paper would absorb movement and help with telegraphing and cracking. I suppose tar paper would do all that and add a moisture membrane,

High up, I never ran across a staircase like that before. Nice work figuring out a way to get some stretch on that product.
Thanks, there was plenty of carpet so it didn't hurt cutting each step 4 inches long. That flap gave me something to stand on while applying foot pressure to the face of the nose. The carpet has virtually no stretch and length either, so stretching it the way I did worked out pretty good. Would have been easier with two people. Each time I stepped down to put pressure/stretch on it, I only put two nails in the nose then moved my foot forward a couple inches and do it again.... and again. I didn't want to get greedy and try and do my goofy stretching in three motions. Lots of baby steps did a nice job.
Thanks for understanding what I did. I wasn't sure it would come across.

Nick would have liked the job that I went down to today. It was part of a new section of housing units being built at the Bandon Dunes golf course. There are three new buildings, each with a lower and upper level. They're basically fancy motel units. A total of eight rooms in each unit. Sitting in the warehouse is 10 rolls of carpet averaging 92 ft long. It's a woven wool carpet by Kane. Might be a blend.
Another installer already has a double layer of tack strip in each room. He might start padding on Monday. I went down there today to measure the carpet cuts. My job is going to be put in the carpet seams together. Other guys are going to stretch it. The carpet has sort of a plaid like design in it. Looks to be a 24x24-in pattern. Dark gray with stripes or should I say 'sort of' stripes..... The stripes are more like dashes then continuous stripes.
I measured the rooms in 16 of the units. They are all within less than half inch of each other on width. That kind of accuracy helps a lot. In length, they were within an inch and a half with exception of one room.
Anybody know if David Hunt is busy?
😁
I don't think he golfs, but I know David could do the seams 10 times faster than I could. Maybe 15 😁
There are five golf courses on this coastal property. A couple courses are very highly ranked in the United States. When it first opened, one of these courses was rated the number one new course in the United States.
Many years ago when the owner started building the first golf course, I thought the guy was freaking nuts. I mean building a golf course right on the edge of the cliffs where the wind blows all summer long. Some people are smarter than me. The owner actually has a private nine-hole golf course at his residence on the course. You have to be friends with him if you want to play that course. 🕺
This course is near the one I worked at ....I mean measured up today.

https://www.top100golfcourses.com/golf-course/bandon-dunes-bandon-trails/Nobody had the slightest idea this course would become so well known.
I think you can buy a $1,600 bottle of wine there if you want..... It's that kind of golf course. I'm thinking that would buy 1600 bottles of beer. 😁
